If you have questions about upgrading your DPM 2007 SP1 servers to DPM 2010, this upgrade advisor spreadsheet should hopefully be able to answer them. It's really simple to use, just select the relevant options from the dropdown lists and hit the Generate Update Steps button.  Then simply follow the upgrade steps provided ! KB962975 - Dynamic Disk Hotfix for Server 2008

Posted by David Thursday, February 18, 2010 11:00:00 PM Categories: Hotfix
A potential problem with Volume Manager on Windows Server 2008 systems may lead to data loss.  This hot fix does not apply to Windows Server 2008 R2 nor does it apply to Vista. Microsoft recommends that you apply this hotfix on any Windows Server 2008 platform that is currently using or planning to use dynamic disks.  This hot fix is not DPM-specific.  However, because DPM servers do utilize dynamic disks, it is important to apply this hotfix on WS08-based DPM servers so that your backup-data is not lost from the DPM storage pool. Automatically Protect VMs using DPM 2010, PowerShell & OpsMgr

Posted by David Friday, February 12, 2010 3:00:00 PM Categories: Configuration Operations Manager PowerShell Protection
The DPM team recently posted a blog article that provided PowerShell scripts on automatically protecting new virtual machines in Hyper-V, original article at http://blogs.technet.com/dpm/archive/2009/12/03/hyper-v-protection-with-dpm-2010-beta-how-to-automatically-protect-new-virtual-machines.aspx. Basically there are two scripts but both essentially do the same thing, when run they look for any unprotected virtual machines and protects them, the only difference is that one is for clustered Hyper-V hosts and one is for stand alone Hyper-V hosts. Both scripts do exactly what they say they... read more

DPM 2010 - SQL Self Service Recovery

Posted by David Thursday, February 11, 2010 9:20:00 PM Categories: Configuration Recovery SQL
Another great new feature of DPM 2010 is the ability for to provide SQL administrators the ability to restore their own databases. Using the new Self-Service Recovery functionality, you can specify which user or group in AD can restore which databases and where they can recover them to. What makes this even better is how easy it is to setup; open the DPM console and click "Configure self service recovery for SQL ..." Wait for the DPM Self Service Recovery Configuration Tool for SQL Server window to open and click Create Role... . On the Create New... read more

Protecting a Workgroup Computer with DPM 2010 - EASY !

Posted by David Thursday, February 11, 2010 3:00:00 PM Categories: Configuration Protection
One of the new eagerly anticipated features of DPM 2010 is the ability to protect machines that are in a workgroup or in an untrusted domain. In the DPM 2010 Beta this feature was not available, however it is available in the DPM 2010 RC and it is very simple to configure. First of all you need to install the DPM agent on the machine you want to protect. I got the agent installer from the Agents folder on the DPM 2010 install media and just ran the relevant architecture executable, in my case DPMAgentInstaller_x64.exe. You do not need to anything to install this agent, just double... read more

DPM 2010 - Refresh Agent Information

Posted by David Wednesday, February 10, 2010 11:15:00 AM Categories: Administration Agents
If you wanted to refresh the information on an agent in DPM 2007, you had to refresh the information on all the agents which was a real pain if you had a high number of agents. This issue has now been addressed in DPM 2010, now you can select a single agent, hit the "Refresh information" button and it will just refresh the info for that one agent. No more will I have to sit and wait for the one agent I am interested in to refresh while all the other agents refresh first. This is only a minor change but a very helpful improvement. ... read more

Create & Delete Recovery Points using PowerShell

Posted by David Thursday, February 04, 2010 9:00:00 PM Categories: PowerShell
By using PowerShell you can do much more in DPM than what is possible by just using the console. A good example of this is the ability to create and delete recovery points. Shane Brasher, Senior DPM Support Escalation Engineer, from Microsoft has put together a handy video to demonstrate this. Source: http://blogs.technet.com/dpm/archive/2010/02/04/how-to-create-and-delete-recovery-points-for-dpm-via-powershell.aspx David Allen MVP System Center Operations Manager ... read more
