Calculating Data Churn

Ever wanted to know how much data your DPM servers are churning?  Perhaps you are looking to implement DPM2DPM4DR and want to know how much data you'll be transferring across you WAN, or perhaps you are investigating what storage to purchase and need this data to make an informed assessment.  Well this is how you calculate your churn, it's easy to do but a bit time consuming as it's not possible to export data from the Jobs view. DPM 2010 Hardware Requirements

I was recently reviewing the hardware recommendations for DPM2010 on TechNet, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399280.aspx, to make sure there are no radical changes . DPM 2010 - Bare Metal Recovery

For those of you who have used DPM 2007, you'll know that if you wanted to provide Bare Metal Recovery protection you had to install a second piece of software called the DPM System Recovery Tool (SRT). This then meant you potentially needed more hardware and then you find that you could only protect Windows Server 2003. SetDpmServer Syntax Mistakes

Automatically Protect VMs using DPM 2010, PowerShell & OpsMgr

Protecting a Workgroup Computer with DPM 2010 - EASY !

One of the new eagerly anticipated features of DPM 2010 is the ability to protect machines that are in a workgroup or in an untrusted domain. In the DPM 2010 Beta this feature was not available, however it is available in the DPM 2010 RC and it is very simple to configure. Re-branding DPM Reports

Why not impress your management by making DPM reports look more corporate by re-branding them. Rather than your reports looking like this: Have them looking something like this: This is very easy to do as DPM reporting uses SQL Reporting Services. First open a web browser and navigate to "http://<DPM SQL Server>/Reports<Instance>", so if you performed your DPM install with SQL it would be http://localhost/Reports$MS$DPM2007$. DPM 2010 - Attach Manually Installed Agents

Attaching manually installed DPM agents to a DPM server has just become a bit simpler in DPM 2010. The same process needs to be followed to install an agent manually as in DPM 2007 which can be found here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb870935.aspx. Where it has got simpler is attaching the agent to the DPM server. Previously you needed to open the DPM Command Shell and run a PowerShell script (Attach-ProductionServer.ps1) with the relevant parameters, now you just use the normal install wizard and select "Attach agents". iSCSI Dynamic Disks on Windows Server 2003

DPM 2007 supports the use of iSCSI dynamic disks on Windows Server 2003, however, it isn't quite as straight forward as it is in Windows Server 2008.   In Windows Server 2008 you can add your iSCSI disks to the DPM server, make them dynamic and then add the disk into the DPM storage pool and you're done.   In Windows Server 2003 you follow the same steps but when rebooted the server, you'll notice that all your iSCSI disks are offline.  The disks can be brought back online manually in disk management but this is not really a practical solution, the disks can also be brought... read more
