DPM 2012
Hi All,
The good folks at Microsoft have recently put out a three post series on DPM certificate troubleshooting, which I thought I would share. Certificates seem to be a common cause of problems, so this series of posts should help many of you.
DPM Certificate Troubleshotting:
Part 1: http://blogs.technet.com/b/dpm/archive/2012/07/23/dpm-certificate-troubleshooting-part-1-general-troubleshooting.aspx
Part 2: http://blogs.technet.com/b/dpm/archive/2012/07/24/dpm-certificate-troubleshooting-part-2-registry.aspx

Ever wanted to know how much data your DPM servers are churning? Perhaps you are looking to implement DPM2DPM4DR and want to know how much data you'll be transferring across you WAN, or perhaps you are investigating what storage to purchase and need this data to make an informed assessment. Well this is how you calculate your churn, it's easy to do but a bit time consuming as it's not possible to export data from the Jobs view.
Open the DPM console, select the Monitoring pane and the Jobs tab.
Click Create Filter from the Actions pane.
Give your new filter a name and select a 24 hour...

I was recently reviewing the hardware recommendations for DPM2010 on TechNet, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399280.aspx, to make sure there are no radical changes . Whilst reviewing I noticed that the minimum page file requirement is greater than the recommended page file size.
Component
Minimum Requirement
Recommended Requirement
Page File
0.2 percent of the combined size of all recovery point volumes, in addition to the recommended size (generally, 1.5 times the amount of RAM on the...

For those of you who have used DPM 2007, you'll know that if you wanted to provide Bare Metal Recovery protection you had to install a second piece of software called the DPM System Recovery Tool (SRT). This then meant you potentially needed more hardware and then you find that you could only protect Windows Server 2003. Well things have now changed in DPM 2010, it is now integrated into the DPM product and you can provide BMR protection from within the same DPM console as you would protect anything else.
"Bare metal recovery is the process of rebuilding a computer after a...

With the introduction of non-domain member protection in DPM 2010, there seems to be some confusion using the SetDpmServer.exe. Over at the Ctrl-P blog, they posted clarification on the correct syntax.
http://blogs.technet.com/dpm/archive/2010/03/02/setdpmserver-common-syntax-mistake.aspx
Basically you can use either:
(A) the [-updatepassword] with the [-isNonDomainServer] parameters together
-or-
(B) the combination [-isNonDomainServer] and [-userName <userName> [-productionServerDnsSuffix <DnsSuffix>]]
-BUT-
Not (A) and (B) at the same time.
Hopefully that...

The DPM team recently posted a blog article that provided PowerShell scripts on automatically protecting new virtual machines in Hyper-V, original article at http://blogs.technet.com/dpm/archive/2009/12/03/hyper-v-protection-with-dpm-2010-beta-how-to-automatically-protect-new-virtual-machines.aspx. Basically there are two scripts but both essentially do the same thing, when run they look for any unprotected virtual machines and protects them, the only difference is that one is for clustered Hyper-V hosts and one is for stand alone Hyper-V hosts. Both scripts do exactly what they say they...

SQL
Another great new feature of DPM 2010 is the ability for to provide SQL administrators the ability to restore their own databases. Using the new Self-Service Recovery functionality, you can specify which user or group in AD can restore which databases and where they can recover them to.
What makes this even better is how easy it is to setup; open the DPM console and click "Configure self service recovery for SQL ..."
Wait for the DPM Self Service Recovery Configuration Tool for SQL Server window to open and click Create Role... .
On the Create New...

One of the new eagerly anticipated features of DPM 2010 is the ability to protect machines that are in a workgroup or in an untrusted domain. In the DPM 2010 Beta this feature was not available, however it is available in the DPM 2010 RC and it is very simple to configure.
First of all you need to install the DPM agent on the machine you want to protect. I got the agent installer from the Agents folder on the DPM 2010 install media and just ran the relevant architecture executable, in my case DPMAgentInstaller_x64.exe. You do not need to anything to install this agent, just double...

Chris Whitehead, who is a Premier Field Engineer for SharePoint in the UK and a fan of DPM, recently posted a series of blogs on SharePoint and DPM. I recommend you take a look, here is the link.

Reporting
Why not impress your management by making DPM reports look more corporate by re-branding them.
Rather than your reports looking like this:
Have them looking something like this:
This is very easy to do as DPM reporting uses SQL Reporting Services. First open a web browser and navigate to "http://<DPM SQL Server>/Reports<Instance>", so if you performed your DPM install with SQL it would be http://localhost/Reports$MS$DPM2007$. This will open the SQL Reporting Services web page, from here click the DPMReports...

Attaching manually installed DPM agents to a DPM server has just become a bit simpler in DPM 2010.
The same process needs to be followed to install an agent manually as in DPM 2007 which can be found here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb870935.aspx.
Where it has got simpler is attaching the agent to the DPM server. Previously you needed to open the DPM Command Shell and run a PowerShell script (Attach-ProductionServer.ps1) with the relevant parameters, now you just use the normal install wizard and select "Attach agents".
After selecting...

DPM 2007 supports the use of iSCSI dynamic disks on Windows Server 2003, however, it isn't quite as straight forward as it is in Windows Server 2008.
In Windows Server 2008 you can add your iSCSI disks to the DPM server, make them dynamic and then add the disk into the DPM storage pool and you're done.
In Windows Server 2003 you follow the same steps but when rebooted the server, you'll notice that all your iSCSI disks are offline. The disks can be brought back online manually in disk management but this is not really a practical solution, the disks can also be brought...
